The Michael D. Palm Center is a new research institution established in October 2006 to continue the work begun by the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military (CSSMM). CSSMM was founded in 1998 and included a board of distinguished scholars and experts including former senior members of the Clinton and Reagan administrations. CSSMM published more than 20 studies about gays in the military, many in leading military journals that had never published on gay issues before, and sponsored lectures at the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, Army War College, Naval Postgraduate School, and elsewhere. Its research was covered widely by major newspapers and television and radio stations throughout the world.
