When the Palm Center learned in March 2018 that the Defense Department was about to release a disingenuous study rationalizing the Trump ban on the basis of false claims – that transgender troops are medically unfit and that medical care for gender transition is unsafe, unreliable, and ineffective – we arranged for 6 former US Surgeons General and 26 retired Generals and Admirals to release statements refuting the falsehoods. We alerted the American Medical Association as well. Then, we quickly researched, wrote, and published a study co-authored by retired military Surgeons General who refuted the Pentagon’s falsehoods point by point. The New York Times published an editorial about our study titled, “A Growing Problem for the Military Transgender Ban: Facts.”
